Accessibility

We work on life-safety systems in buildings the public uses. It would be a poor look to do that from a website some of the public cannot use.

The standard we target

This site is built to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. That is the standard the New Zealand Government applies to its own websites, and it is the one we hold ourselves to.

What that means in practice

• Every page works without JavaScript. Nothing on this site is hidden behind a script that has to run first.
• Every page can be operated by keyboard alone, with a visible focus indicator.
• Every image carries a text description. This is enforced when the site is built — an image without one stops the build.
• Every form field has a real label, not a placeholder standing in for one. Errors are described in words, tied to the field they belong to, and everything you typed is kept when a form comes back with an error.
• Text meets the required contrast against its background throughout.
• Text can be resized to 200% without breaking the layout or losing content.
• Interactive controls are at least 24 by 24 pixels, and the important ones — phone numbers, buttons — are 44 by 44 or larger.
• Animation is minimal, and what exists is switched off automatically if your device is set to reduce motion.
• Headings are properly structured, so a screen reader can navigate by them.

Known limitations

Being honest about the gaps is more useful than claiming there are none.

• PDFs. The documents on our downloads page are older files that were not produced with accessibility in mind. They may not read well with a screen reader. If you need any of them in another format, ask and we will provide it — see below.
• The customer portal. Our portal is operated by Simpro and is not built by us, so we cannot vouch for its accessibility.
